          In September 1999, Harland C. Stonecipher gave a speech that opened with a passage from Isaiah Chapter 8, verse 6, " Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, ‘Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?’ And I said, ‘Here am I. Send me!’”             He did so because he was preparing for a call to action. In my lifetime I have witnessed incredible progress for humanity.   The facts show a significant decrease in poverty and disease, with corresponding improvements in education, healthcare, human and civil rights.   But I’ve also seen us repeating the same mistakes over and over again. The coronavirus pandemic of 2020 has presented unprecedented challenges: medical, scientific, political, economic, social and moral.   The medical or healthcare industry feared that hospitals would be overrun, that the lack of masks, gloves and ventilators were in such short supply that people would die who otherwise would have survived the virus.   Science does not have answers to origin nor cure.   Politicians have taken the unprecedented approach of “pausing” economic and social life as the only response to address the fears articulated by the medical and scientific communities. I have been thinking quite a lot about the real economy and the financial economy.  I draw a distinction between the vast majority of the citizens of the United States of America in the real economy -- they work and earn and save and spend -- and the financial economy.  The real economy has household and business income. Citizens must have housing and items inside the home. They must have food and transportation and clothing and entertainment...the list is obvious because we are all part of this real economy.  We earn. We borrow. We spend. We save.  As you aggregate the real economy, real goods are produced and consumed either at home or abroad. Real supplies and materials ladder up into increasingly complex goods.  Real work is done on infrastructure and real innovation and research occurs.  This is different than the financial economy. Student debt deserves our society’s attention.  It deserves a solution that releases the burden for our young citizens while strengthening our nation's cultural foundation and o ur social fabric. I have often wondered how to best address the 21st century requirement for leadership.  How do we best develop citizens for this and the next century? I turn my mind to President Kennedy, and the establishment of first, the Peace Corps, and then, VISTA which embraced Americorps in 1993. Could the issue of student debt be reframed from “transfer the debt of students to punish the wealthy and successful” to “relieve debt through service to country and world?” What if we could make the following offer to every citizen: "By pledging no less than 3 and no more than 5 years of service to the  U.S. Military, Americorps and Peace Corps,  all of your education debt is relieved." Let me address a good question, “what is an affirmation?” An affirmation is a small positive statement which you repeat to yourself, to reinforce or change thinking patterns on a sub-conscious level. Our minds generate a constant stream of sub-conscious chatter. Although we are often unaware of the substance of that chatter, it is frequently a stream of negative thoughts. Affirmations are a conscious decision to implant quality thoughts and to repeat those thoughts to such a degree that they become a belief. Becoming aware of your negative or sabotaging thoughts is the first step. You then need to stop those thoughts as soon as you recognize them. It’s OK to go after what you love in life, and don’t take no for an answer. o A little orphan boy had a pet donkey and he it became very ill. He wanted to take it to church to have it healed, but the friars would not let the donkey in. He was told to lead it down to the basement sanctuary, but it could not fit down the stairs unless a wall was removed. He was told that only the Pope could give permission to remove the wall. So the boy went to the Vatican. He was repelled by the Swiss guard, and turn away by a secretary who threw the flowers he sent to introduce his plea out the window. The boy was dejected, and started to leave, but a father was walking in the Vatican garden and saw the discarded flowers. It looked to him as if they were weeping blood onto the feet of a statue of Jesus. He read the note, and raced to find the orphan.
